What are Treatment Centers for Teens Like?
According to the National Institute on Teen Drug Abuse, there are just as many varieties of drug treatment for teens as there are for adults. Most of these treatments are very similar in both form and function. This is also true for teen treatment centers. One of the major differences between adult centers and teen centers is teen centers are often only voluntary with parental consent.
The first thing that you will experience in a teen treatment center as well as an adult treatment center is an intake appointment. Here is where an addiction counselor goes over:
- The schedule
- The rules
- Dos and donts of treatment
- Phone and other privileges
- What is expected of you
The counselor might also go through any amenities that the program has. You will also probably be searched and have your belongings searched. This happens in all inpatient rehab centers. Each center is different as to what they allow you to bring in and what they don’t. You might want to ask what is allowed before your intake appointment.
The beds in most facilities are comfortable but most teen facilities have people housed at least two to a room. You will most likely have a roommate. Some facilities match roommates with addictions while others match depending on what bed space they have open.
The housing situation usually is individual to the facility but most of them try for pleasant, neutral accommodations. Some facilities have a limited number of single rooms but these are usually reserved for those who need a quiet space to detox from a drug.
You will go through withdrawal usually with medical assistance depending on the type of drug you are addicted to. Each person is different when it comes to withdrawal but most teen centers attempt to cover the basics when it comes to withdrawal.
There are places where you can be if you wish to be left alone and there are group spaces where you can interact with others while you are in withdrawal.
The activities offered depends on the type of treatment center. Each center will have its own amenities. Some treatment centers are rural while others offer more urban activities. Typical activities offered are:
- Horseback riding
- Other activities
The activities at teen centers tend to be more teen oriented. They work on teen problems such as trust building, peer relationships, and social skills. Many of the adult treatment centers focus on more adult concerns. It makes sense that teen activities are more centered on teen concerns rather than those of adults. Most people who attend a good teen treatment center do not return to drug use once they get older.
As with all activities most teen centers have schedules that you have to follow. These schedules include counseling, therapy, medical visits, and medication management. These are normal activities for all rehabs. For more information or to find a teen treatment center near you call us at 800-721-8114.
